How a Dutch postcode works
A Dutch postcode has four digits and two letters, for example 1012 LG. The four digits stand for an area: a neighbourhood in a city, or a village with its surroundings. The two letters narrow it down to one street, or to one side of a long street, usually 10 to 25 addresses. Together with the house number, a postcode points to exactly one address.
On envelopes the postcode goes before the town, with one space between the digits and the letters: 1012 LG Amsterdam. The letters F, I, O, Q, U and Y are not used, and letter pairs like SA, SD and SS do not exist.
Where the data comes from
Every answer comes from the BAG (Basisregistratie Adressen en Gebouwen), the official register of all addresses and buildings in the Netherlands, kept by the municipalities and published by Kadaster. Neighbourhoods and districts come from the CBS wijk- en buurtindeling. We refresh the data regularly; the date of the current copy is shown with every answer of the API.
